About the small series
I asked Clemontine.
[About Little rabbit]
Q) How was your small work?
A) I used to make small things a long time ago, but now there are a lot of big pieces. This piece had to go back to that unique feeling of making small things. But soon my original feeling revived.
Q) You like rabbits.
A) I am fascinated by the form of a creature called a rabbit. A rounded body and ears that stretch straight towards the sky. This exquisite balance. And that silence. When you see them, you will only see them for a moment.
Q) This rabbit's body is slightly tilted.
A) This rabbit wants to attract someone's attention. It's a signal to ask to look at me and to be involved in me.
Q) Why is a rabbit's tail gold?
A) I wanted a surprise at the back. The tail, shaped like a golden flame, is a symbol of energy and action. It's the moment when you think you've seen a wild rabbit, but it disappears immediately.
The photo shows an exchange with Clemontine, which is currently being produced.
[About Sleeping cat]
Q) Do you remember when you made this work?
A) My sister asks, "You make people and animals that sleep well, but does that mean you're tired?" (laughs). I love entering a dream world and descending from reality. The existence of living creatures is just one "outer shell." There is a wider world inside.
The prototype of the sleep cat. Size that can be wrapped with both hands.
Q) What kind of dreams does this cat have?
A) That's what you think.
Q) Your cat is always lying down or sleeping.
A) Seeing animals staying still makes me feel very calm. That's why my work naturally seeks that. I also like "mystery." For example, it's fun to lie on the table or place your cat in a place you shouldn't normally be there. This probably represents not only the cat, but also my own personality.
Q) Have you ever owned a cat?
A) I've been living with cats for a long time. And I was always with all sorts of animals. My mother worked for a theatre company, so she often adopted animals that appeared on stage. Although we didn't have the money, my twin sister and I lived in a small apartment in Paris, surrounded by cats, dogs, a small monkey called Zephyr, and mini goats. Later, when I was living with my grandmother, I became close friends with Parrot. Animals have always been part of my life. My grandfather was an animal-motivated sculptor, and even incorporated animal shapes into chairs, tables and lamps. So, for me, animal shapes were very familiar.
[About Quiet little crocodile]
Q) Please tell me about crocodiles.
A) I have been researching the shape of crocodiles for some time now. I've also made bronze benches with crocodiles, big enough to sit on them. I love powerful, patient crocodiles. Its skin is thick, almost like an old rock. This crocodile has a bit of a mischievous eye. It was like a long-awaited creature looking down at us with a slightly antics.
Q) This crocodile looks quiet, clever and clever.
A) I want to build a friendly relationship between the viewer and the work. For example, I am not interested in simply describing a scary wolf or crocodile as "scary animals." The world is already full of violent images. So I use the energy of kindness and compassion to express myself from a different angle.
Q) Name this crocodile green.
A) Please choose your favorite: "Ancient Green", "Old Moss", "Deep Green".
We chose the green glaze for the crocodile from a large number of samples. The ceramic piece in the center is a sample of the colours sent by Clemontine from France.
Q) You once said, "Small pieces are like talismans." How about this even smaller series?
A) These are also charms. Each person has a small habit of bringing good fortune. For example, your favorite fabrics, numbers, photos, text, or small items in your pocket. I hope these works will become such "amusic talismans."
Q) Are there any small animals you want to make?
A) It's a honeybee.
