A tenugui with tonkachi.

Since I realized that Tenugui's genius, I have been fascinated by Tenugui and have made many Tenugui.

Tenugui is a primitive towel from the old days, right? If you think that, you're a big mistake. Its uses are endless, and although it is the most familiar everyday item, it is also the most familiar art.
He supports my everyday life with as many ideas as I can think of, while also filling my everyday life with a variety of colors and designs. No matter how much I praise him, I still can't say enough.

Now, welcome to Tenugui's ever-deep, beautiful world. We will deliver you plenty of the charm of Tonkachi tenugui.

What's amazing about Tenugui!

1. Dry quickly!
Both ends of the tenugui are "uncut." It has no seams, so moisture does not accumulate and dries quickly. It is a thin material with 100% cotton that can be seen through the other side, so just spread it out and dry it for a while and it will dry quickly.

2. Suck it off more and more!
If you take a closer look at the tenugui fabric, you will see that it is slightly fuzzy. This is responsible for absorbing moisture, and the more you use it, the more the fabric becomes more comfortable, softer, and the more water absorbent it becomes.

3. Wrap all sorts!
The "cloth wrapped" culture is known overseas as a unique Japanese culture. There are ways to wrap lunch boxes, plastic bottles, and box tissues that can be used in daily life, and also for wrapping gifts.

4. It can be used in a variety of ways!
Not only can you wear it as a towel, but it can also be worn as a hat or sunshade, or it can be used as a kitchen or cleaning at home.It can be used in a variety of ways, making your daily life more convenient and enjoyable.

On the go...

Apron quickly!
If you don't want to get dirty with your clothes, quickly turn them into an apron for meals.

Quickly put on a hat!
On days when the sun is strong, simply place it on your head to soften the direct sunlight. If you gently hide it under your hat, it will protect you from the sun while keeping the wind through smoothly and comfortable.

Stole round!
Use it as a shade at your neck, or on hot days, wrap ice packs to keep it cool.It is also gentle on the air conditioner's cold prevention measures.

Over there, over here!
For travel and outdoor activities. Wipe your body after a bath and dry it overnight and use it immediately the next day. It can be used to cool down by wetting it, or as a sweat wipe or as a towel. It is light and dries easily, making it a reliable ally for traveling and playing outside.

At home...

Of course, it's a towel!
If you hang it in the sink or kitchen, it can be used as a hand wipe. It dries easily even on humid days, so you can use it comfortably anytime.

It can also be transformed into an interior decoration!
Wrap a box tissue or use it as a blindfold in your basket. With just one tenugui, you can gently cover your everyday life. You can enjoy your favorite patterns like art if you frame them and display them.

This is what you don't need in the kitchen!
Place under a cup to drain it. Wipe the dish and wipe your hands. This is a great piece to use in the kitchen as well.

It can be used even when it gets tattered!
When it gets old, use a cleaning cloth. It wipes away any dirt and works well until the end.One of the attractions of Tenugui is that it can be used up all the way to the end.

The beginning of the tonkachi and tenugui.

The JAPAN series has now become a staple at Tonkachi Stores. This series is a team of artists, Tonkachi, and workshops all over Japan who inherit traditional Japanese techniques, to create original products unique to Japan. The tenugui was the first memorable item.

When I tried using tenugui, I was surprised. It can be used for a variety of purposes, and is beautiful, and most of all, fun! Tenugui was also the crystallization of the wisdom and beauty of Japanese people's lives.

Tonkachi, who made it and used it, became increasingly attracted to its appeal, has since released new works every year. Because I want everyone to know how amazing it is!

We also receive production details from our Kyoto workshop, which always dyes wonderfully. The warmth and unevenness of the waves can only be achieved by hand.

The history of tenugui.

Part 1:

Tenugui are said to be an item with a long history that has been around since the Nara period.

Part 2:

In the olden days, plain weaves were used as accessories for cleaning gods and Buddhas and festivals, but became popular among the common people as cotton cultivation increased during the Edo period.

Part 3:

As it is becoming more common, it is becoming more popular, and its use is not only used in situations related to gods and Buddhas, but also as a towel or as a prom for its use. Its versatility has continued since the Edo period, as it was used like a noren to block the sunlight.

Part 4:

As dyeing techniques improve, tenugui will also become a popular fashion item. You will also develop a sense of competition for the fashionable patterns and colors. Tenugui were also used to represent individual identity.

Part 5:

As the Meiji period began, with the import of Western towels and handkerchiefs, tenugui gradually began to be treated as a thing of the past.

Part 6:

However, the tenugui culture continues unceasingly. In modern times, the practicality and stylish design of tenugui has attracted attention again, and its culture has been re-evaluated.

That's all for Professor Neko Tengu's tenugui history lecture.
