About Goldie making dolls

Goldie the Dollmaker

About Goldie making dolls

Goldie makes a living by making dolls. She makes her dolls in the footsteps of her parents, but she makes them in a different and more honest way than her parents. She is always talking to the dolls as she works, and for her, making dolls is more than just a job. And her dolls have developed a somewhat devoted following, selling more dolls than her parents ever did. So she's had some success. She takes some pride in that. She also has a different side. A little girl comes to the bakery and holds her doll in her hand. She says the bakery owner tries to tell her that Goldie is the author, but she interrupts him and she does not reveal that she is the author. She feels like it's better not to do that. Here, we can see her strict ethics rather than her kindness. She is afraid that by identifying herself as her creator, it will cause a rift between the girl and the doll, and she is not okay with that. However, there is also a little bit of her sense of justice mixed in with it.・・・・・・

Interesting contents of the BOX set

① I put it in a special box.

Cross pasted BOX set

This is a luxurious cross-covered box carefully finished by a box maker in Kyushu. The image of Goldie facing her work is printed with foil stamping. In the story, Goldie was particular about the box in which she put her doll. I put this box set in a special box with the same feeling as Goldie.

② Completely new English version

Goldie the Dollmaker / Goldie the Doll Maker (English version)

This book is one of Goffstein's masterpieces, published in 1969 as his fifth work following ``Beyond the Sea''. Rather than simply reprinting the original English version, the design has been completely redesigned using newly discovered original paintings before coloring. We have created a completely new English version.

③ Cute tool box

Goldie the Toolbox / Goldie in the toolbox

This is a special issue of a Japanese original project. The content is a summary explanation of the story in Japanese. This is an illustration collection of props that appear in the story. The props that appear in Goldie are cute, so I created this with the image of an illustrated book-like collection made by the props person.

④ Plush Goldie

With wooden carved doll

I made a Goldie stuffed animal for the box set. Based on the doll released at the time of publication, we added a new wooden carved doll. The clothes are also very carefully made, and you can take them off and put on your boots and underwear. Limited production of 300 pieces.

⑤ Wooden carved doll

Wooden doll made by Goldie

This is a wooden doll made by a wood carver from Hokkaido. Each piece is handmade, so no two are alike. The dolls are made to look like they are still being made, with the image of Goldie walking around with a half-finished doll.

⑥ Linen Goldie

tote bag

I made a linen tote bag. We selected one special sketch from among the valuable sketches not included in the main text. It is carefully silk-printed at a print factory in Okayama Prefecture and finished at a sewing factory in Okayama. Goldie doll and matching one strapIt's a bag.

 M.B. Goffstein

When Goffstein was a child, books were so wonderful that he couldn't believe they were made by humans; he thought they were gifts from God. And ever since he learned that people wrote books, he has wanted to become a book writer. She says the experience of reading a book is the same as her real life experience. A spiritual and philosophical story, a world of life and fantasy in the form of a children's book. And this simple line that is ``cute and irresistible.'' A heart full of love poured into a flat surface

We chatted about Goldie.

We talked about ``Goldie the Dollmaker'' with S, a designer and planner, M, a newcomer, and O, who was just passing by.

O:When did Mr. S meet ``Goldie the Dollmaker?''

S:I fell in love with Goffstein after seeing ``My Neighbor'' at Aoyama Book Center, and I was probably around 24 years old when I went to Palette Club (a graphics school in Tsukiji). I used to give ``Otonari-san'' to friends. At that time (around 1999), there wasn't as much information on the Internet as there is now, so people often went to bookstores and encountered all kinds of things there.

*Neighbors: Goffstein's 1989 picture book. A Japanese translation was published in 1989 (currently out of print). Tonkachi is planning to publish a remastered version with a new translation.
*Aoyama Book Center: A large bookstore strong in art and design whose main store was in Aoyama. Everyone loved it back then.
*Palette Club: An illustration school located in Tsukiji, established in 1997. S was a student when he was just starting out.

M:Huh, that's it.
*This person is a new graduate of the internet generation, so he doesn't know that everyone goes to real bookstores all the time.
*By the way, M is currently going to Palette Club.

S:I also bought the Goldie doll there, but I don't think I bought the book at the same time. I bought Goldie at Narnia (a long-established children's bookstore) in Ginza.

*S remembers very well what he bought and where he bought it.
*The Japanese version of Goldie was released in 2005, so S seems to have encountered the stuffed animal first.
*Goldie doll: Mr. S has been showing me this doll every now and then (Tonkachi President K's statement). So it was natural that we would reprint it in this BOX set.

O:So, what did you think when you read it?

S:Ah, this person's new book has come out! Well, I just love drawing. So, I bought it right away, and at first I just looked at the pictures, but then one day I read it properly and the content really stuck with me. That was probably around the time I wrote the letter to Mr. Goffstein (around 2005).

*Goldie's original book was published in 1969, but the Japanese version was released in 2005.
*S wrote a letter to Mr. Goffstein, and now he is publishing a book in Tonkachi.

O:How did you feel?

S:At that time, I was very busy at work and had experienced all sorts of setbacks, so perhaps that's why I thought that everything written in this book was applicable to work and manufacturing. is not it. If I were to exaggerate, I feel like it describes the way I lived my life that I couldn't put into words. Also, I found myself empathizing with the main character, Goldie. I thought you were the same as me.

*At this time, S was working at a company that made cameras called Power Shovel, and was busy making cameras, books, music, and all sorts of other things.
